PROGRESS REPORT PRESENTED TO THE RIVERS CONFERENCE MEMBERS AND DELEGATES OF THE CHURCH OF GOD (SEVENTH DAY) BY THE CHAIRMAN OF COG7 SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME BRO. BARNABAS J. AWARI (JP) ON THE 16TH DAY OF SEPTEMBER, 2018 AT 36 GAMBIA STREET, MILE II DIOBU, PORT HARCOURT.

Protocols:
I greet you all in the matchless name of the Great Provider Jesus Christ.

Thanks and God bless you all. Recall that, on the 21st Day of January as contained in the RCO's opening address of 11th February, 2018 a committee called COG7 Rivers Conference Scholarship Scheme was inaugurated and saddled with some responsibilities, otherwise known as terms of reference. In the terms of reference, the major assignment was to coordinate the disbursement of scholarship to The Church of God (Seventh Day) Rivers Conference Students in the various tertiary institutions within the country through any modality that may qualify a beneficiary.

I want to use this medium to inform you that the Scheme has met on several occasions to discuss on how effective it could profound selection-modalities that would be free from sentiment, tribalism, non-Christian disposition and any attitude that may make the Church regret for choosing its membership.

In one of her meetings, the members came up with a modality of convenient coordination and application forms distribution so that the forms and other information could be assessable to interested candidates.

In addition to the use of the church website, the members were made zonal coordinators which include: Rivers Conference North, coordinated by Brother Barnabas J. Awari (JP), Rivers Conference South coordinated by Pastor Abel J. Enwume and then Rivers Conference East coordinated by Brother UgorjiAhiakwo (JP).

The compositions of the zones are as follows:
1 Rivers Conference North: Usomini, Omoku, Egi and Umu-Obor Districts.
2 Rivers Conference South: Ubie, Upata and Upata 1 Districts.
3 Rivers Conference East: Port Harcourt and Ikwerre Districts.

Would-be beneficiaries were not restricted to any means of assessing the application forms but were permitted to assess it through any means or zone that would be convenient to them.

Hard copies of the application forms were printed and distributed to all zones and soft copies pasted on the church web site for would-be beneficiaries to assess. Two forms were filled and returned through the site in addition to Sixty Eight (68) hard copies filled and returned making a total of Seventy (70) application forms returned. Out of this number, only Sixty Five candidates participated in the screening exercise on 15th May, 2018. The duration for the collection, filling and submission of the application forms was two weeks from 17th through 30th March, 2018. The screening date was first scheduled to hold on the 8th Day of April, 2018. But due to circumstance beyond our control the date was rescheduled for 15th April, 2018.

In the terms of reference, it was instructed that the scheme was under obligation to open an account with any bank of her choice with the following as the signatories to the bank account: 1. The Chairman of the scheme; 2. The Secretary of the scheme and 3. The Administrative Board Chairman representing the Conference Executives. In the light of this, I want to inform you that the scheme has actually opened a savings bank account with Unity Bank Plc. Omoku, with account details as follows: Account Name: The C.O.G. 7th Day Rivers C.S.S. Account Number: 0032034941. It is also worthy to note that the sum of Two Million Naira (N2,000,000.00) was credited to the account by the donor on the 18th Day of May, 2018. In the same vein the disbursement to confirmed beneficiaries was carried out between 21st through 25th Days of May, 2018. The confirmation of successful candidates' membership of the church and request for their bank account details were made through phone calls.

Every one of us here present would recall that the donor on the pronouncement of the donation promised to give scholarship of N100,000.00 each to twenty beneficiaries. But the scheme deemed it necessary to increase the number of beneficiaries to twenty five as the need was so high. This brought the amount for each beneficiary from One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000) to Eighty Thousand Naira (N80,000.00) each.

In the light of increasing the number to twenty five candidates and also not concentrating on level one hundred (L-100) students have made the number of beneficiaries to be increasing every year as graduates of each academic year shall be dropped after graduation and new ones taken. There is also room for those who applied this year, but could not sail through to apply again in the subsequent season/academic year if they are still in school and willing.

The scheme also wishes to use this medium to inform everyone that in addition to the basic sum of Two Million Naira (N2,000,000.00) for the scholarship, the sum of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000.00) was also disbursed to the scheme for the daily running and actualization of the scholarship project by the same donor Beloved Bro. (Dr.) OkechukwuObara.

The sum mentioned above was judiciously utilized to pay for the transport fare of members, print materials/documents, buy office files and host examiners who assisted the scheme in question setting/marking of scripts. The marking and grading of the scripts were done on the same day of the screening and submitted to the website managers for pasting on the website. The same money was also used to pay for the service charges of the fund transfer to beneficiaries and other logistics. The sum of Six Thousand, Five Hundred and Fifty Eight Naira, Seventy One Kobo (N6,558.71K) was the available balance in the bank as at the time of this report. In the light of the on-going, five (5) candidates shall drop and another five candidates taken for 2018/19 academic session bringing beneficiaries to a total of 30 persons within 2 academic years. Praise the Lord!

Challenges: In as much as humans' endeavours are concerned every human activity has its challenges. The scheme was not an exemption and was faced with the following challenges to mention but a few:
1. Candidates who could not submit their forms before the expiry date submitted theirs on the day of the screening.
2. Admission letters of some who participated had expired before the current academic year.
3. The names in some candidates' admission letter did not correspond with the names in the application forms.
4. Not all candidates who participated in the screening exercise were members of The Church of God (Seventh Day).
5. The bank account names of some of the successful candidates/beneficiaries did not

correspond with the account details submitted to the scheme, making the scheme members to spend more money in calls, visits to bank and producing another transfer forms to suit the situation.

Achievements:
1. The disbursement was successfully made.
2. The acknowledgment of the receipt of the scholarship and the thankful expression by recipients to the church also made us happy, among others.

Appreciation:
We thank and praise the Almighty God for providing the church with someone like Beloved Bro. (Dr.) OkechukwuObara, and also granting us the wisdom to carry out this herculean assignment without having division or misunderstanding among us. May His name alone be honoured forever and ever in Jesus Name, Amen.

We also wish to specifically thank the Rivers Conference Overseer, Pastor Monday Elechi (JP), the Rivers Conference Ministerial Council Chairman Pastor Kingdom EnockIsirima (JP) and the Rivers Conference Administrative Board Chairman Elder Jonathan Ikechukwu Willie for their prayers, moral support and advice. We will not also forget the Principal of COG7 Academy Omoku where the screening exercise was done, Elder Sunday Ile Ubochi, for assisting in the marking and grading exercise. Evangelist (Dr.) Anthony Allen Ozuruoke the Secretary of the Governing Board of COG7 Academy, is not also left out of the appreciation because of his immense contribution in the setting of the questions and also participating in the marking and grading exercise, and others who participated in one way or the other. May God richly bless them all in Jesus Mighty name, Amen.

Conclusion:
The assignment for 2017/2018 is concluded while praying God to give us more grace for the task ahead and more resources to the donor Bro. (Dr.) OkechukwuObara and anyone who may borrow a leaf from him. We are grateful and willing to do more services to God and the church in any capacity. We also welcome any good ideas and suggestions to improve on our assignment. Thanks and God bless you all.
